When Should My Child See the Dentist for the First Time?

Your child should see a dentist for the first time before his or her first birthday. In fact, you should take your child to a pediatric dentist in Brooklyn roughly six months after your child’s first tooth comes in. Heading to the dentist early can allow your dentist to discover any potential problem areas before they are painful for your child.

Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

The major purpose of the first visit is for your child to meet Dr. Yury Slepak and become comfortable with him.

Dr. Slepak specializes in pediatric dentistry, so your child’s teeth and oral health are in good hands.

At the appointment, Dr. Slepak will do an initial evaluation to take a closer look at:

  • How individual teeth are growing
  • Problems with decay
  • Potential bite problems
  • Signs of problems with the gums or jaw

A quick cleaning may also occur at your child’s first visit. However, it is possible that your child will be uncomfortable with the visit, so an examination may not occur—this occasionally happens to every kid’s dentist. If this happens, we can reschedule the appointment and try again at another time.

Dr Slepak and his team of highly trained hygienists will see your child at the time of the first visit, parents will also learn about the proper way to brush a child’s teeth. Dr. Slepak can explain some of the best methods to get your child to brush properly. Forming good brushing behaviors at a young age will create healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Preparing See the Dentist

If you talk to your child ahead of time about what will happen at the dentist, you may be able to curb any fears or nervousness about going seeing a Brooklyn kids’ dentist. Some children are excited about the idea of taking care of their teeth, while others are more hesitant. Explaining to your child that you are going to the dentist to take care of his or her teeth can help build excitement.
