Teeth Whitening Truths for Children and Teens

Today’s societal influence on appearance has put the pressure on people – even children and teens – to make their smiles whiter and brighter. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that first and foremost, children and teens (adults, too!) see the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and oral health check-up.

IF You Choose Tooth Whitening, WHEN is it Safest for Your Child?

As for tooth whitening, the AAP highly suggests waiting until the ‘baby teeth’ have fallen out, and the individual’s full set of permanent or ‘adult teeth’ comes in. This typically happens around the age of 13-15. It is also suggested to wait until after all of the permanent teeth have erupted fully. Many folks may opt to use an over-the-counter tooth whitening alternative, such as strips or trays. However, parents must be carefully reading the ingredients and researching the products they purchase. Though many of them are considered to be relatively safe for teens and adults, they are likely not the best option for younger children.

What Are the Most Common Teeth Whitening Options?

You have many options available to you when it comes to teeth whitening. Dental bleaching inside of a dentist’s office typically uses carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to brighten one’s smile.

At-home options are often very popular and range from the use of whitening strips, gels and trays, and pens. Other “natural” options include baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and cutting down on teeth-staining foods and drinks such as coffee, teas, sodas, and foods with dyes.
