DENTAL CROWNS FOR CHILDREN’S PRIMARY TEETH. QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED BY PARENTS AND OUR ANSWERS.

1. Can kids get dental crowns?
The answer is definitely yes. Dental prosthesis is recommended for highly damaged teeth. If the baby tooth is covered with a crown, you and your child won’t have to face such problems as a chipped tooth or a falling out filling until the baby tooth gets replaced with a permanent one.
2. How many dentist visits does it take to put a dental crown on a baby tooth?
Normally, it doesn’t take more than one visit. Dental crowns for baby teeth are standard and vary in size. The dentist chooses the right size for your child and installs the crown during one visit. This is very convenient, as children and their parents get tired from multiple dentist visits. This also gives the dentist an opportunity to install the crowns under general anesthesia if many teeth have to be treated at once.
3. Can a tooth get decay under a crown?
Dental crown is the most hermetic type of restoring highly damaged baby teeth. Installing dental crowns after root canal treatment is recommended by European and American Academies of Pediatric Dentistry as the safest type of dental restoration for baby teeth. The conclusion is that the tooth doesn’t get decay under a crown; on the contrary, the crown helps to preserve the integrity of the tooth.
4. Does one have to remove a lot of healthy tooth tissue in order to install a dental crown?
Dental crowns are generally put on teeth highly damaged by decay or teeth that have had root canal treatment. The structure of such teeth has already been badly damaged; a crown helps to strengthen the thin walls of the tooth.
5. Should we expect gum pain following a dental crown procedure?
Some sensitivity is possible in the first two days after the procedure.
6. Stainless steel crowns? Ugh, only grandparents wear those!
Stainless steel crowns are the most economic though fully functional type of standard kids’ crowns. If you don’t want to see stainless steel in your child’s mouth, we can currently offer highly aesthetic and very safe zirconia dental crowns.
7. Zirconia crown is too expensive for a temporary tooth that will anyway fall out!
Yes, this is not the cheapest solution to the problem. However, if we use a zirconia crown to restore the child’s tooth, he/she will use this tooth for a few years!
