Cosmetic Improvements: White Fillings

No matter how diligent parents are with brushing and flossing their children’s teeth, cavities can occur. According to Dr. Yury Slepak, an American Board Certified Pediatric dentist with Brooklyn Pediatric Dentistry, tooth-colored composite fillings are the best solution when needing to restore your child’s teeth.

Why are composite fillings better for your child?

Composite fillings are made from composite resin and are aesthetically pleasing and better than metal fillings. Composite resin fillings cause less damage to the tooth, since metal fillings expand or contract with temperature changes, which can cause the tooth to crack. More importantly, metal or silver amalgam fillings contain a small amount of mercury. While most dentists agree that the small amount of mercury in metal fillings is safe for your child, it’s best not to take that chance when there are other options available. Since composite or white fillings are tooth-colored, no one will know your child has had a cavity.

Why would you fill baby teeth when they are just going to fall out?

Obviously, your child will need his baby teeth for eating, but they’re also essential for speech development, and they’re needed to maintain a proper bite until the adult teeth grow in. Preserving your child’s baby teeth is essential to the growth of his permanent teeth and white fillings are one way to preserve his primary teeth until they naturally fall out.
