Teens and Teeth Whitening
Everyone wants a white smile, especially teenagers who are very appearance conscious. The market for teeth whitening products has grown exponentially over the years, but teens who want to whiten their smile should do so under the supervision of a licensed dentist. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends that children should wait until they are fourteen years old before beginning teeth whitening treatment. Dr. Yury Slepak, an American Board Certified Pediatric dentist with Brooklyn Pediatric Dentistry, urges teens and parents to consult with a dentist before beginning any cosmetic improvements because before the age of fourteen, the tooth’s pulp is not fully formed and teeth whitening products may irritate sensitive gums or damage dental fillings and crowns.
A custom-made bleaching tray can be made by your dentist to ensure the product is being applied appropriately. Your dentist can also advise you on safe, effective teeth whitening products. There are two types of teeth whitening methods: bleach and whitening toothpastes. Bleach can permanently change the color of your teeth because it is a chemical process that bleaches the enamel. Whitening toothpastes use a gentle abrasion and polishing agents that remove stains, but do not permanently change the color of your teeth.
How can you keep your teeth sparkling white naturally?
Avoid coffee, tea, soda or nicotine. These products stain your teeth. If you drink coffee, use a straw to prevent staining and brush immediately afterward. Most important, brush and floss your teeth regularly to remove residual food and drinks. If you follow these directions, your smile will be one you can be proud of for decades to come.
