At What Age Should My Child Get Braces?

Have you noticed that your child’s teeth don’t look quite right? Some children experience overcrowding, crooked teeth, or an overbite or underbite as their permanent teeth come in. Often these problems cause self-esteem issues and a change in appearance, which can easily be rectified. However, in extreme cases, overbites and certain jaw problems can become health issues.

For this reason, you should visit your child’s dentist and get a referral to an orthodontist at the first signs of crooked teeth, overcrowding, or bite issues. Only an orthodontist can determine whether or not your child will require braces, and when to apply them.

Generally the problems that may require braces for correction become apparent around the age of seven or eight. However, sometimes it may not become noticeable until as late as the age of ten. If you take your child to the orthodontist before age ten, they probably will not get braces right away. The orthodontist will, however, make a plan to address the issue as the permanent teeth come in.

There is no definitive age for getting braces. Even adults can get braces, and at times they are given to children younger than ten. However, the ideal time for children to get braces is between the ages of 10 and 14. During this time the child’s mouth and head are still growing, and therefore are more easily manipulated by the braces.

In addition, by waiting until the age of 10 you are ensuring that all of your child’s permanent teeth have come in. Getting braces when your child has a mixture of primary and permanent teeth can cause additional adjustments and alignments to be made. They may also have to wear the braces for a longer period of time.

Take your child to the dentist as soon as you notice a problem. They will be able to determine the best course of action for your child based on their development and dental issues. If it is determined that they are not ready for braces, you can set up another appointment down the road and have a plan in place to get the braces when they are ready.

You should also consider your child’s development when deciding when to get braces. Braces require diligent dental hygiene. If your child does not brush regularly or properly, they are not ready for the responsibility of braces.

Also discuss the procedure with your child to prepare them. If they seem to be frightened of the process, or concerned about changes to their appearance, you should address these concerns right away. An orthodontist can often help them overcome these fears by answering questions in a direct and forthcoming way.

However, you should not get your child braces until they are emotionally ready for the challenge. If you know that your child will need braces, take them to the dentist to get their questions answered at an early age. Then you have months or even up to two years to prepare them emotionally and developmentally for the process.

Overall, the decision of the age of your child when they get braces is a joint decision between you, the orthodontist, and your child. All must be fully involved and fully committed to the process. Once that occurs, your child can be on their way to a healthy, beautiful smile.
