6 Reasons You Need a Dental Cleaning Every 6 Months
I always tell my patients to come in for a cleaning and a check-up every six months or twice a year. Why? It’s quite simple: to give your dentist or hygienist an opportunity to compare the state of your oral health to that of previous visits. Regular check-ups and dental cleanings are the only way to prevent you from heading in the wrong direction and intervene before minor problems escalate to serious ones.
Here are 6 reasons it’s important to keep up with your dental cleanings.
1. Stop Gum Disease
Having your teeth cleaned can prevent gum disease, which leads to early tooth loss. Visiting your dentist regularly is the best way to detect gum disease, or its earliest stage of gingivitis. Your dentist will be able to see the early phases of gum disease long before the telltale symptoms of red and swollen gums appear. By diagnosing gum disease early, I’m able to return your gums to a healthy state.
2. Brighter Smile
Don’t forget the most obvious answer! When you get a cleaning, your dentist or hygienist can remove stains that dull and discolor your teeth, so you’ll be left with a brighter, whiter smile.
3. Fresher Breath
Regular check-ups and dental cleanings help prevent and resolve persistent bad breath. Using professional dental tools, I can remove the plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria buildup that a patient was not able to access at home. We can effectively clean the entire mouth, which can help to improve bad breath.
4. Prevent Cavities
Plaque buildup eats away at your enamel, which can lead to cavities. Together with brushing and flossing twice a day, dental cleanings help prevent cavities.
5. Prevent Tooth Loss
Plaque causes tooth decay. Plaque buildup leads to gum disease, which is the major cause of tooth loss. Through good oral habits and dental cleanings, we can prevent tooth loss.
6. Improve Overall Health
Since everything is connected in the human body, your overall health is largely dependent on your oral health. Keeping your teeth clean lowers your risk for certain diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
